Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport is set to become a little quieter, with Terminal 5 now beginning the first phase of its new ‘Silent Airport’ initiative.
The idea is simple: instead of filling the terminal with constant public-address announcements, travellers will increasingly rely on digital screens and online services for routine flight updates. General announcements will be reduced, with most flight-related messages focused around departure gates.
For passengers, the change should make time at Riyadh Airport feel calmer and less cluttered with background noise, while still keeping important information easily accessible.
Flight updates can be checked through the airport’s website and digital signage, while the airport’s WhatsApp service on 920020090 can provide notifications, baggage tracking and information about airport services. The ‘Ask Me’ customer service team will also be available for anyone who needs assistance.
The rollout will happen gradually, with further phases expected to be announced later. Importantly, travellers won’t be left wondering what is happening at the gate. Any important announcements related to operations, security, and emergencies will continue as needed.
The move also builds on a wider shift towards quieter, more digital airport experiences internationally. Dubai International Airport introduced its own silent airport initiative in 2010, while Abha International Airport became the first in Saudi Arabia to adopt the concept in 2024.
For one of the Kingdom’s busiest airports, the move could make a noticeable difference, particularly during busy travel periods. At times when the airport is likely to be crowded, a quieter terminal and clearer digital updates could make the journey from check-in to boarding feel a little more relaxed.
