Saudi Arabia has officially announced 2027 as the Year of Water, a national initiative that prioritises water sustainability and security, and environmental awareness.
A detailed programme for the initiative is yet to be revealed. However, the Year of Water will generally support water conservation efforts, resource management, and generate public awareness that aligns with the goals of Vision 2030.
One of the main reasons behind choosing 2027 as the Year of Water is that Riyadh will host the 2027 World Water Forum, making it the first city in the Middle East to host. The forum brings together governments, environmental experts, organisations, and industry leaders from across the world to exchange ideas and solutions for water sustainability.
Riyadh, being the host city for the World Water Forum, also marks Saudi Arabia’s progress in the field of water security. The country has successfully reduced groundwater consumption in recent years. It has also expanded its water and wastewater services and enhanced water supply systems.
Aside from raising awareness around the importance of water security, the Year of Water encourages innovation and better cooperation between public and private sector organisations.
As a whole, Saudi Arabia continues to emphasise long-term resource conservation and sustainability under its national transformation agenda.
