Red Palace Riyadh is Getting a New Life as a Luxury Boutique Hotel

One of Riyadh’s most recognisable historic landmarks is about to take on a very different role. After more than 80 years as a royal residence and government building, the Red Palace Riyadh, in Al-Fouta, is being restored and transformed into a luxury boutique hotel.

The palace dates back to 1942, when King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud, the founder of modern Saudi Arabia, ordered its construction. Work began the following year, and the building quickly became a notable part of Riyadh’s changing skyline.

The Red Palace was Riyadh’s first building to be constructed using reinforced concrete and cement, reflecting a city that was beginning to move into a new era of development. It continued to evolve over the decades.

The palace was once home to King Saud before becoming the headquarters of the Council of Ministers, making it an important place for the Kingdom’s political and administrative discussions.

Now, with the restoration, the historic building is set to feature 70 rooms and suites, alongside 8 dedicated spa suites, 5 high-end restaurants and cafes, a fitness centre, and curated event spaces. Original traditional Najdi architectural details will also be retained, giving the property a direct connection to its past rather than simply recreating it as a modern hotel.

That heritage is also shaping the property’s new visual identity. The design will take cues from the building’s original craftsmanship, inspired by details found throughout the palace, including its decorative plaster rosette, geometric elements, and ironwork.

For Riyadh, the transformation offers an interesting way to experience a piece of the capital’s history from a different perspective. A building that has witnessed decades of change is preparing to open its doors once again, this time with hotel guests rather than royals and government officials.

The Red Palace Riyadh is expected to open later in 2026, though an official date has not yet been confirmed.
