The International Falcon Breeders Auction has returned to Riyadh, bringing breeders, buyers and falconry enthusiasts from around the world to Malham, north of the capital.
Running until Tuesday, 25 August, the event is being held at the National Centre for Falcons and features birds from leading breeding farms across North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Participating countries include the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, France, Spain, the UAE, Bahrain and Korea.
This year’s edition introduces an important new rule. Only falcons purchased through the auction will be eligible to compete in local and international chick-racing categories.
Buyers can also enter competitions organised or co-organised by the National Centre for Falcons, with total prize money reaching SAR 50 million. Pedigree, breeding quality, price and racing potential are expected to shape purchasing decisions, particularly for those looking for birds suited to Melwah racing.
Held annually, Melwah sees trained falcons compete over short distances, showcasing their speed and the skill of their trainers.
Beyond the live auction, visitors can explore pavilions for local and international breeding farms, falconry equipment and specialist supplies. Interactive displays and the Falconer of the Future pavilion will also introduce younger visitors to the heritage and traditions of falconry.
Last year, 1,103 falcons were sold by 67 breeding farms representing 23 countries. More falconry events are planned for autumn, including the International Saudi Falcons and Hunting Exhibition, the Melwah Race, the National Falcon Centre Auction and the King Abdulaziz Falconry Festival.
