Imagine walking through a botanical garden while it’s more than 40°C outside. That experience could soon become a reality after Riyadh Mayor Prince Dr Faisal bin Abdulaziz bin Ayyaf confirmed that King Abdullah International Gardens Riyadh is nearing the final stages of construction.
During a recent inspection of the project, he revealed that the gardens are expected to open soon and highlighted the striking temperature difference between the inside and outside of the covered botanical complex. The temperature is what grabs people’s attention. What will probably keep them coming back is everything else.
It Is Much Bigger Than a Park
Calling King Abdullah Gardens a park doesn’t really do it justice. Covering more than two million square metres, the project is expected to become one of the world’s largest covered botanical gardens and the largest temperature-controlled botanical garden anywhere in the world.
Instead of creating another green space, the idea is to build somewhere people can spend hours, whether that means exploring the gardens, visiting exhibitions, stopping for lunch, or simply enjoying being outdoors without worrying about the weather.
There will still be plenty to learn, but it doesn’t sound like the sort of place where you spend the afternoon reading information boards. The themed gardens, interactive exhibits and walking trails have been designed to make exploring feel natural, whether you’re visiting with children, meeting friends, or just looking for somewhere different to spend a weekend.
Why Everyone Is Talking About the Temperature
The climate-controlled environment is easily the feature people have been talking about most. During the mayor’s visit, temperatures outside the gardens were above 40°C, while the covered gardens remained at around 21°C.
Anyone who has lived through a Riyadh summer will probably understand why that matters immediately. For much of the year, people naturally wait until the evening before spending time outdoors. King Abdullah Gardens could change that.
Instead of planning everything around the weather, visitors may be able to enjoy the gardens in the middle of the day without feeling like they have stepped into an oven. That alone would make it unlike almost anywhere else in the city.
What Will There Be to See?
The gardens are designed to offer much more than plants. Plans include seven themed botanical gardens inspired by different environments and periods in Earth’s history, alongside a botanical museum, research facilities, and a gene bank dedicated to preserving plant life.
There will also be cafés, restaurants, children’s play areas, markets, event spaces and viewing points throughout the site. Rather than arriving for a quick walk before heading home, it feels like the sort of place where you could easily lose an entire afternoon without realising how much time has passed.
When Will It Open?
There is still no official opening date. However, the mayor confirmed that the project is now in its final stages of construction and said residents can expect the gardens to open soon.
As the project approaches opening, more details about visitor access, opening hours, and ticketing are expected to be announced through official channels.
A Different Kind of Attraction
Riyadh has opened plenty of impressive attractions over the past few years, from museums and heritage sites to entertainment districts and public parks.
King Abdullah Gardens feels a little different. If you’ve lived in Riyadh for any length of time, you’ll know how much the weather shapes everyday life. It decides when people go for a walk, when families visit parks and even when friends meet for coffee outdoors.
