Bait Al Oud Riyadh has entered a new stage with its move to JAX District in Diriyah. The relocation comes at an important moment for the academy.
In July 2026, Bait Al Oud celebrated the graduation of its first group of students, marking the first clear results of a programme created to train musicians while preserving the traditions behind Arabic music. The new campus now gives that work a more permanent home within one of Riyadh’s most active creative districts.
More Than Learning an Instrument
Bait Al Oud was established in Riyadh in September 2023 by the Saudi Music Commission under the supervision of Iraqi oud player and composer Dr Naseer Shamma.
The academy is part of the wider Bait Al Oud project, which has developed specialist music schools in several Arab cities. Its purpose goes beyond teaching students how to perform individual pieces. Training brings together practical lessons, music theory and a deeper understanding of Arabic musical traditions.
The oud remains central to the programme, but it is not the only area of study. Recent Bait Al Oud listings have included training in oud, qanun, saz and ney, along with oud craftsmanship. Students learn how the instruments are played, but also how sound, technique and musical structure come together.
That wider approach matters. Arabic music is shaped by more than technical accuracy. Musicians also need to understand maqamat, listen closely to the people performing around them and develop enough confidence to interpret a piece rather than simply repeat it.
The academy’s first graduation ceremony showed how that training works in practice, with students presenting musical performances after completing their studies.
A New Home in JAX District
JAX District feels like a natural setting for the next stage of Bait Al Oud. The former industrial area has become an important part of Riyadh’s cultural scene, bringing together galleries, artists, filmmakers, designers and creative organisations. Moving the academy there places traditional Arabic music within a district already built around artistic exchange and new ideas.
The relocation is expected to support the expansion of Bait Al Oud’s academic programmes and musical activities, while giving students a setting that connects them more closely with the wider creative community.
It also makes it easier to imagine the academy becoming part of everyday cultural life in JAX rather than operating only as a private teaching space.
Bait Al Oud has already taken part in public programmes that include guided visits and introductory sessions where people can learn more about traditional instruments. During Riyadh Music Week, visitors have also been offered free hands-on experiences alongside the academy’s training programme.
Why Bait Al Oud Matters
Riyadh’s music scene has become far more visible in recent years, with concerts, festivals and international performances now forming a regular part of the city’s calendar.
However, a music scene cannot grow through performances alone. It also needs teachers, students, instrument makers and places where musical knowledge can be passed on properly.
Bait Al Oud helps provide that foundation by preparing new musicians while protecting the traditions that shaped the instruments they are learning to play.
The graduation of its first students shows that the programme is beginning to deliver what it was created to do. Its move to JAX gives the academy room to build on that work.
